It was a solemn day, the air was thick with an approaching storm, and Helena Insmir walked with her head bowed. She curtsied at the dais, kissed the king's gloved hand, and paid respects to the queen. Helena stayed there amongst the grieving courtiers until the queen was escorted by her guards and the king had given his speech. Only when the priest had given his blessings and the pyre was set alight when there was nothing left of the prince but charred ash and a lingering smoke did she lift her chin and make her way home.

For the past 3 months, home had been a dingy bed chamber on the top floor of a shacked building that seemed to groan like an angry beast — constantly. The plan was to stay in the city for a few days more, and then set out for the gilded river and make her name disappear with the southern wind. by the time she reached Eltrain, she would be weighed down by nothing more than the weight of gold.

It wasn't uncommon for an infant to die young, she had been one of the five midwives who bought the child into this world, She had also been the one to return him to the next. Now she would count down the days until this could all be left behind. But a lot could happen in three days.
